We have the great pleasure to present the work of the artist Georges Bru, through two exceptional and retrospective exhibitions.
The first from the 60s to the 70s and the second from the 80s to the 90s.
This artist, regularly exhibited at the Gallery Le Troisième Œil until the early 90s, was followed with great attention by Anne-Marie Marquette because of the singular interest of his work.
Born in Fumel in the Lot et Garonne in 1933, Georges Bru spent his childhood and his youth in Albi, under the good influence of the work of Toulouse-Lautrec. He lives in Toulon since 1976 where he taught drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts until 1993.
Georges Bru started to paint in Bordeaux where he gave birth to black paintings where the line appears engraved in a layer of glue …
Drawing prevails since the 70s, but the line disappears to leave room for the chiaroscuro and to reveal his personal universe, filled with a surreal humor, in which the shadow creates light.
His imaginary characters have a unique destiny, that of fulfilling their reality dictated by the title of the work that announces them as the prologue of a play, like the “Character frankly in profile“.
The animal identity in a state of proximity or continuity is also present, in a gesture underlined by a feeling of affection.
Georges Bru shows through his drawings the unacknowledged intention of representing the chosen figure as an element of metamorphosis that leads to dialogue, between surreal and poetry.
